CAPACITY BUILDING FOR DISTRICT GENDER WORKING GROUP ON GENDER MAINSTREAMING

Secretary of State for the Promotion of Equality (SEPI) sent six presidents of District Gender Working Group (GTJD – Grupu Traballu Jéneru Distritál) to Jakarta, Indonesia to deepen their knowledge on gender mainstraming. The activity is part of the SEPI’s agenda so that the participants have satisfactory understanding of the topic when they undertake their duty in the field. The six participants were from districts of Aileu, Baucau, Bobonaro, Ermera, Manufahi and Oecussi. The participants attended the training in Ministry of Women Empowerment and Child Protection of Indonesia (KPPPA). The training facilitated by PTTIRO, KPPPA and two facilitators Agus Salim and Wawanudin.

AMBASSADOR OF THAILAND FAREWELLS THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE PROMOTION OF EQUALITY

Ambassodor of Thailand Mr. Tawatchai Koopirom visited SEPI for the last time on Friday, 12 September 2014 due to his completion of incumbency in Timor-Leste. In the occasion, Mr. Koopirom expressed his gratitude towards SEPI especially the Secretary of State Mrs. Idelta Maria Rodrigues and all cooperation have been made together given that SEPI has shown its remarkable jobs throughout the cooperation between SEPI and the government of Thailand.

SOCIALIZATION OF LAW AGAINST DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN LIQUICA

The socialization was also attended by the local authority such as Liquica District Secretary, which at the same time is in charged as the president of Liquica District Gender Working Group Mr. Aurentino dos Santos. In the occasion, Mr. Santos explained the reason why Guico village was chosen to conduct the socialization, he stated �Guico village is an isolated village with the slightly higher percentage of domestic violence compare to other villages in Liquica�.

WOMEN CONGRESS IN ERMERA DISTRICT

Secretary of State for the Promotion of Equality (SEPI) held a congress for women in Ermera district to provide support for women participation in decentralisation as part of municipality that will be established in a short time in all districts of Timor Leste. The congress received support not only from SEPI but also from civil societies. Some of the activity delivered in the congress including: dialogue with SEPI, capacity building for women about relevant topics of decentralisation, thematic discussions to form women platform, establish association of women in districts and organize election to choose leader within each association; and inauguration for the association.

VISIT TO THE OSLO CENTRE FOR VICTIMS OF VIOLENCE

As part of the trip to Norway, Sra Idelta Maria Rodrigues, Secretary of State for the Promotion of Equality, visited the Oslo Centre for Victims of Violence on 10 June 2013, and spoke with Director Ms. Inger-Lise W. Larsen. The Centre was established in 1978, and was the first shelter in Norway. It was the 2nd shelter to be established in Europe, after the United Kingdom. It remains as the only shelter in the Norwegian capital Oslo, and is the biggest in the country. It shelters women and children, including those who are trafficked, victims of forced marriages, and victims of extreme social control and isolation.

SEPI REPORT ON GENDER MAINSTREAMING PROGRESS HIGHLIGHTS NEED FOR INCREASED GOVERNMENT LEADERSHIP

On 19 December 2012 the Secretary of State for the Promotion of Equality of Timor-Leste (SEPI) convened the last meeting of the year with the Chairs of the Gender Working Groups across key Ministries and State Secretariats and Districts to discuss progress made in integrating a gender perspective in the development of policies, programs and budgets across the Government. The meeting was opened by Veneranda Lemos, Secretary of State for Support and Promotion of Private Sector.

Ambassador of Thailand farewells the Secretary of State for the Promotion of Equality
